The novel starts off with a flashback of sorts, then slowly through the present tense, memories are related to what Sade is doing in real life at the time, or an object sprouts a memory in her mind and make's her feel either uncomfortable or comforted. Most of these flashbacks explain how events led up to her mother's death.
Some of the flashbacks though explain Sade's personality and the type of person she is, the flashbacks usually have a happy spark about them showing that this event has made a huge impact on her life. The plot center's very much around Sade's view on the world and her opinion is always present. The event that fuels the main character's actions is her uncertainty and her respect for her dad's intelligence. She trust's that her dad's descision to send her and her brother to another country for their safety. Her dad's motivation for getting out of the country lies with the death of his wife and Sade's mother.
The death of Sade's mother was caused by gunmen hired to kill Sade's father but as he was not there at the time of their arrival, they shot his wife instead. The motivation for them to shoot his wife was money, the motivation for paying gunmen money to kill Sade's dad was that he dad spoke out against corruption in the government and the attrocities the government was committing.
The motivation for Sade's dad to write out against the government is that he believes in the truth and that the truth should be available to all. After he finds out a fellow reporter was executed by the government, he starts writing an article despite warnings from his brother (a lawyer) and his wife. On the Monday after the weekend he writes the article, gunmen turn up at the house and shoot dead his wife. His brother then tells him it is no longer safe and the formulate a quick plan to get Sade and her brother Femi out of the country.
